5 Simple Ways to Balance Vata This Fall

By Mel, 500-hour RYT · Well With Melo

Vata imbalance affects all of us from time to time, especially in fall. You might notice anxiety, brain fog or irritability, plus dry skin, poor circulation, cracking joints, trouble sleeping or sluggish digestion.

When Vata is high, "just do more yoga and breathwork" can feel overwhelming. So here are five gentle, simple ways to balance it.

1. Create a routine

This doesn't mean adding more to your plate. It means steadying it: waking, eating and going to bed at similar times each day. Rising early helps reset your rhythm and makes you feel more prepared for the day.

2. Add warming spices

Not ready to give up your iced drinks? Add warming spices where you can: ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, black pepper. Traditional Ayurveda also suggests adding honey only once a drink has cooled a little, rather than heating it.

3. Walking meditation

No hiking trail needed. Walk slowly around your block or a local park and notice the trees, leaves and birds. Fall shows us that cycles end. Notice it without judgement.

4. Colour therapy

Fall's reds, oranges and yellows are deeply grounding colours, linked to the lower chakras that govern stability, flow and willpower. Notice them on your walk or in the produce aisle. Colour can spark creativity too, and creativity is one of Vata's gifts.

5. Touch

Warm oil on the face, body and scalp grounds Vata and nourishes the body. Can't do a full self-massage every day? Just rub warm sesame oil into your feet before bed. It's lovely for sleep. Learn the full ritual in Abhyanga: Ayurvedic Self-Massage.

These practices work all year, but they're especially helpful in this transitional season.
