The Doshas in Love: How Vata, Pitta and Kapha Love
By Mel, 500-hour RYT · Well With Melo
Whether or not you celebrate Valentine's Day, it's a fun time to ask: how do you love, and how do you like to receive it? In Ayurveda, when the doshas are balanced, love flows. When they're off, we can block it. Love is a vital force tied to our wellbeing and health.
Every person is unique, and many of us are a mix of two doshas, so take what resonates.
Vata in love
Vata types tend to be creative, spontaneous and energetic. Space and air relate to sound and touch, so they often show love through touch, sweet gestures, surprises and spontaneous acts of kindness. They love new experiences and see beauty everywhere. They're often the artists, and might express love through a poem, a song or a painting.
Love language: touch and security. Vata loves freedom, but feels most loved with a partner who offers grounding, comfort and stability when they're feeling vulnerable.
Pitta in love
Pitta types tend to be confident, intelligent and focused. They show love through acts of service, shared adventures and deep conversations. They can be direct (that sharp Pitta tongue!) and when they commit, they're all in. Balanced, they have the nurturing, protective side of water.
Love language: quality time and honesty. Pitta feels loved through real conversation, shared goals and a partner who meets their passion while helping them cool down.
Kapha in love
Kapha types tend to be steady, patient and nurturing. They show love through devotion, consistency and dependability, often through cooking, generosity and physical care. Their calm can ground an anxious partner, and they welcome you with open arms.
Love language: appreciation. Kapha loves to give, so they feel most loved when their efforts are noticed and appreciated, and when someone gently gives back.
