Mindful Eating: 5 Ayurvedic Tips to Be Present at Every Meal
By Mel, 500-hour RYT · Well With Melo
Not so long ago, it was normal to pause and give thanks before every meal. Today we may feel deep gratitude for our favourite latte, but do we actually stop and feel it?
Setting an intention before eating brings us into presence. With presence comes stillness, and we can tune into the body more deeply: the smell, taste, colour and texture of our food. That stillness opens the door to gratitude, and to noticing how different foods actually make us feel.
5 tips for mindful eating
1. Take a few breaths before eating
Breathe deeply into your belly. You can close your eyes or simply bring your attention to your stomach.
2. Give thanks
Silently or out loud, with words or a mantra that feels right for you.
3. Slow down
Chew fully and let your mouth start the work of digestion.
4. Take 100 steps after your meal
A classic Ayurvedic tip: a short, easy walk to help digestion.
5. Try a mudra
Mudras are hand gestures that move energy through the body. If you feel bloated after eating, try Samana mudra: bring all five fingertips together on each hand and breathe slowly for 30 seconds.
What you focus on grows. Finding gratitude in something as simple as a meal can help you feel more content and at ease, even when life is busy.
