Spring Reset: The Benefits of a Gentle Ayurvedic Cleanse
By Mel, 500-hour RYT · Well With Melo
Each season gives us a chance to refresh and reset. Like nature, we have our own rhythm, shaped by the five elements.
In Kapha season (spring), earth and water are high, and we may feel heavy, sluggish or congested. It's a natural time to lighten up. (In Vata season, fall, we do the opposite: nourish and ground.)
Why spring?
Spring is damp and heavy, and Kapha supports lubrication and the lymphatic system in the body. Many of us notice more fatigue, allergies or congestion. A gentle reset gives digestion a rest so the body can lighten.
A gentle kitchari reset
In Ayurveda, a traditional spring reset is a simple mono-diet of kitchari, a warm, spiced dish of rice and split mung beans. It's nourishing and filling, so unlike harsh cleanses, you won't feel depleted. Warming spices keep digestion strong while you simplify.
A typical gentle reset looks like:
- Reduce alcohol, caffeine, processed sugar and heavy foods for a few days before
- Eat kitchari for breakfast, lunch and dinner for 3 days
- Sip warm water and herbal teas throughout
- Ease back into your usual foods slowly
Rest is part of it
Spring is a time of rebirth, and a reset invites you to slow down, reflect and let go of what no longer serves you, including old habits and beliefs. Plan it for a quieter few days. Make time for journaling and meditation, and keep movement gentle.
Please be safe
Some people feel tired, get headaches or notice digestive changes as they adjust. Stay hydrated, rest, and stop if you feel unwell. Check with your doctor before trying any cleanse, and skip it if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, have a health condition, take medication, or have a history of disordered eating.
