Why you feel scattered in fall, and what helps
By Mel, 500-hour RYT · Well With Melo

If you've felt a little all over the place lately (racing thoughts, restless sleep, stiff joints, dry skin, energy that spikes and crashes), you're not imagining it. In Ayurveda, yoga's sister science, fall is Vata season, and it affects almost everyone.
The good news: once you understand what's happening, a few small, steady habits make a real difference.
What is Vata?
Ayurveda describes three energies, or doshas, that make up everything in nature, including us: Vata (air and space), Pitta (fire and water) and Kapha (earth and water).
Vata is the energy of movement. It's light, cool, dry, quick and always changing, a lot like a windy fall day. When Vata is balanced, we feel creative, inspired and light. When there's too much of it, we feel scattered, anxious and depleted.
Why fall brings out Vata
Look outside: the air gets cooler and drier, the wind picks up, leaves fall and days get shorter. In Ayurveda, like increases like, so the season's qualities show up in your body and mind too.
Vata is also strongest between 2 and 6, both morning and afternoon. That's why the early morning and that mid-afternoon slump can feel especially wired or foggy this time of year.
Signs Vata might be running the show
- A busy mind, worry or trouble switching off
- Light or broken sleep
- Stiff joints, tight hips or low back
- Dry skin, lips or hair
- Cold hands and feet
- Irregular appetite or digestion
- Feeling tired but wired
5 simple ways to balance Vata this fall
The Ayurvedic rule is simple: balance with the opposite. Vata is light, cold, dry and moving, so we bring in warm, steady, nourishing and grounded.
1. Keep a rhythm
Vata loves consistency more than anything. Wake, eat and sleep at roughly the same times each day. A steady rhythm is one of the most grounding things you can give your body.
2. Eat warm, cooked foods
Swap cold smoothies and raw salads for soups, stews, roasted root vegetables, oats and warm spices like ginger, cinnamon and cumin. Sip warm water or herbal tea through the day.
3. Move slowly and close to the ground
Fast, high-intensity workouts can add to Vata's restlessness. Gentle, low-to-the-mat yoga with longer holds helps you feel steady. Start with my free yoga classes for a stiff body.
4. Oil your body
A few minutes of self-massage with warm oil (called abhyanga) before your shower is deeply calming for dry, Vata-season skin and a busy nervous system. I use classical Ayurvedic oils from Rasa Ayurveda (code WELLWITHMELO10).*
5. Start your morning gently
Before your phone, before your to-do list, give yourself five to fifteen minutes to arrive in your body. It sets the tone for the whole day.

Frequently asked questions
When is Vata season?
Roughly from early fall into early winter, when the weather turns cool, dry and windy. In Toronto, that's usually October through December.
Can anyone feel Vata imbalance?
Yes. Even if your natural constitution is more Pitta or Kapha, the season's qualities can still throw you off.
